Indie-folk musician Thea Gilmore is set to kick off her new UK tour at the Exeter Phoenix this month.
The singer-songwriter, whose riveting voice at times recalls the elegance of Annie Lennox, has been making intensely personal, socially aware music to considerable acclaim since she was a teenager.
Described by Mojo magazine as ‘the most coherent, literate and charged British singer-songwriter of her generation’, Thea’s sound is a glorious mix of folk, jazz and Americana.
Now releasing her 10th album, Murphy’s Heart, Thea is able to count Bruce Springsteen, Martha Wainwright and Joan Baez as part of the ever-growing queue of artists lining up to collaborate with her.
With a diverse mix of musical influences ranging from Tom Waits to Elvis Costello, The Beatles to Joni Mitchell, Thea’s sound has real soul and she thrives on the interaction with her audiences and fans, both old and new.
Thea said: “There are people out there who have really stuck with me. I speak to a lot of people who come to gigs, but I try and speak to everyone.
“With Murphy’s Heart I want people to hear the progression, the broadening of what I do. I’ve stepped outside my musical box and actually pulled it off!”
Thea Gilmore is at Exeter Phoenix on September 26, supported by Louis Eliot and the Embers. Tickets cost £12 (£10) from the Phoenix website.
